What to do if it rains on your wedding day

They say it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day, but unless you & your groom are rain obsessed, most brides hope and pray that it won’t rain on their big day. BUT. It does happen. And I want to assure you that if it does, it won’t ruin ANYTHING about your big day!!! In fact, it has the potential to be extra magical.

Here’s 3 tips I recommend to keep in mind if the rain does make an appearance on your wedding day:

1. Don’t panic! Unlike the wicked witch of the West in Wizard of Oz, the rain won’t make us melt so we’re in the clear! I encourage you not to panic because at the end of the day, you’re getting married to the love of your life rain or shine and that’s what’s most important!! Your marriage is what you’ve been planning & preparing for and why all your favorite people have gathered together. No precipitation can steal the joy away!

2. We highly recommend that you coordinate with your venue to have a rain plan from the very beginning of your planning process. This is especially important if you’re planning an outdoor wedding!

If you’re recently engaged or still on the hunt for your wedding venue, I’d recommend factoring the rain plan into your decision to move forward with that specific venue. If it were to rain, would you still be happy with the location based on the rain plan? Most of the time, the answer is yes and it’s 100% worth the risk but it is worth taking into account. Thankfully, most venues have already done the hard work for you and have an established rain plan to ensure everything run smoothly on your big day!

3. Let us worry about the photos! This is our specialty and what we love to do!! Let us do our job so you can do yours: get married and have a blast! A few things that we keep in mind for rainy day portraits:

  • Overcast skies means vibrant colors so this is NOT a problem! In fact, sometimes after it rains the sky is even more misty and magical. Who knows, we may even get a rainbow!
  • We keep clear umbrellas for the Bride & Groom in our car for every wedding and we’re not afraid to use them if we need (view some examples: Catherine & Ryan & Cameron & Jordan).
  • If there’s large trees, a porch, gazebo, or some sort of awning anywhere near by, we can get SO much variety in one location! That’s all I need: one covered location.
  • If it clears up, we’ll take advantage of it! Drew constantly checks the radar on rainy wedding days so if we see some clear skies in our future, we’ll work with your planner/day-of coordinator to make sure we can steal you away for a few minutes.

I hope this can put your worries to rest and help you go into your wedding day confidently, rain or shine. We can’t wait to celebrate you as you step into marriage with your best friend!
